“Talkoot” is a Finnish word for getting things done together while enjoying good company.

For MyData 2016 conference we organised monthly events called “talkoot”, where volunteers, partners and team members workshopped about various aspects of the event. The events were liked by the attendees and the core organising team – it helped the organisations massively. This year we do the same, just weekly. In two cities physically and virtually via Hangout and Slack!

Weekly Talkoot are organized with an “open office” mentality. Core crew members will be at the office every Thursday 4–6 pm to host workshops. MyData Talkoot is a perfect way to to jump into the creation of the conference before the actual event, since active participants will get free tickets to the conference. Everyone is welcome to join!

Talkoot starts by creating color coded name stickers and quickly getting know who is who.

Red – newbie, those who are for first time at Talkoot get a red name

Blue – oldie, those who have taken part earlier get a blue name

Black – core, the core team members have black names

Red-named participants, after snacking and chatting, get an introduction to the MyData conference and Open Knowledge Finland to catch up what’s going on. Blues and blacks go directly to the workshops, where the red ones join after the introduction presentation.

So far we have covered topics such as website testing (a lot of it), programme topic refinements and brainstorming possible partners. In future we plan to have a movie night (no, not Die Hard but about data regulation), write tweets, what not! We also are very open to suggestions, so come and tell us what you want to do!

For weekly updates, follow us on Twitter, find our Facebook event, and join in our Slack!

Welcome to Talkoot and #MyDataCrew!
